Algae Control

Algae Control is probably one of the #1 issues among aquarists, especially in newer tanks.  I have tried several methods of control, and unfortunately, I am still having some trouble keeping it under control.

I have been experiencing blooms of brown macroalgae, then red macroalgae, then the dreaded green hair algae.  It seems to cycle in that order, occasionally I will get a mixture of two, but usually, it is predominantly one type.  My tangs have been grazing on some of it, but not enough to keep it under control.  I recently purchased a Lawnmower Blenny - that ugly little critter CHOWED on the algae, and had it in check within a week or two.  Unfortunately, he died after 1 1/2 months.  He stopped eating, got real skinny, and I was unable to keep him alive - even in a quarantine tank treated with copper and Marin Oomed.  I purchased another Lawnmower Blenny with the same results - only he lived an additional week.  My LFS said, "I have another one..."  Sure, sell me another one!  Why are they dying?  "I don't keep them for more than a week or two before I sell them.  I don't know...."  Hmmm...  Anyone have any insight on these critters?  E-Mail me, please!

I will be installing a Culligan Reverse Osmosis (RO) system soon, and I'm told that this will eliminate the phosphates in the local water.  Hopefully, this will cure the algae blues!
