The 1999 MS 150 -
Pedal to The Point. All that I can say about it right now is WOW!!! I am so
glad that I decided to do this ride. I had so much fun... made some new friends,
enjoyed comaraderie all along the route with the other riders, volunteers, and local
townspeople. And... I've met a personal goal that I set for myself! I have
nothing but good feelings about the entire weekend.... and I will definitely be back next
year!Saturday, August 21st, 1999
6:15 AM - The
Performance Six Pack got things rolling early Saturday morning. We met for our team
photos... well, most of us did! :o) Most of us were pre-registered, some
of us weren't. Luggage needed to be dropped off at the trucks, bikes needed a final
inspection, water bottles needed to be filled, etc... It took us a while to get
organized, and we were at the Start Line and ready to leave the Berea Fairgrounds.
7:14 AM -
We rolled over the Starting
Line... and began our 75.8 mile journey to Sandusky. The group was pretty tight for
the first 5 miles or so, and then began to thin out. I rode with Mary the first few
miles. Then, I saw something fall off of my bike! I wasn't sure what it was...
and stopped. After about 5 minutes of looking around and finding nothing, I decided
to continue. I grabbed my handlebar extenders, and noticed that the plug had fallen
out of the right one!! <Eyes rolled up in my head, and a slight shake of my head
from side to side was observed by the riders passing me by!> I eventually met up
with Frank and John, and rode to the first rest stop.
8:00 AM - I rolled past Rest Stop #1, located at the intersection of
Grafton and Station in Valley City. 12 miles complete, 63.8 miles to go! John
and Frank were slightly ahead of me as we came up on the intersection. It was busy
with bikes and cars, and while I was paying close attention to the cars, I lost John and
Frank at the rest stop - I couldn't tell if they stopped, or kept going, so I continued
solo.
8:39 AM - I rolled past Rest Stop #2 on Avon Lake Road in Litchfield,
21.4 miles from Berea.
9:21 AM - I stopped at Rest Stop #3 on West Road in Wellington, 31.1
miles complete, 54.4 miles to go. I grabbed some grapes, a banana, and countless
cups of Gatorade. I refilled my water bottle, and after 9 minutes, I was rolling
again at 9:30 AM.
10:09 AM - I
pulled into Oberlin High Shcool, and met up with John once again. We parked our
bikes together, and went in for a well deserved lunch after pedaling 38.2 miles... 47.3
miles to go. We ate lunch with Frank, Mary and Ann. I left the High School at
10:32 after a 23 minute break.
11:15 AM - I rolled past Rest Stop #4 on Garfield Road in Wakeman.
48.5 miles complete, 27.3 to go. A few miles later, I met up with Todd and
his cousin, someone who I've been e-mailing with for a while. We tried to get
together on the Towpath, but it never worked out. We rode together for a while, then
Todd pulled away... he's a bit better on the hills than I am - the Towpath has me
spoiled!! :o)
11:56 AM - I stopped at Rest Stop #5 at Berlin Heights Middle School
briefly for water and a quick banana. After a 2 minute stop, I was rolling again,
with 56.5 miles complete, 19.3 to go.
12:45 PM - Rest Stop #6. The Kuhl Family on Sheid Road in Huron
hosted the final Rest Stop, and I stopped in for more water and a quick bunch of grapes.
It was getting warmer out, and I was going through water a bit quicker! 65.6
miles complete, 10.2 miles to go! Almost there!
1:38 PM -
Sandusky High School - FINALLY!! The last 10 miles were a killer -
We had a constant head wind blowing us back the whole time, and it made pedaling at any
speed difficult. This was my slowest leg of both days, but I made it! Frank
had pulled in 10 minutes ahead of me, and John pulled in shortly after I did. Soon,
Mary, Ann, Tim, Mark, and the rest of the team pulled in. I had a total time of 6
hours, 24 minutes, took 4 breaks for 37 minutes for a total ride time of 5 hours and 47
minutes. My average speed was 13.1 mph.
2:00 PM -
I
met an online friend in the parking lot! I didn't see her at first, but as I began
to walk to the rear of the property, I saw Gaye, her boyfriend Rick and his 2 children
walking towards me! We talked for a while, took a picture together, and said
"See you online!" That was so nice to finally get to meet someone that
I've been talking to for so long!
2:30 PM - Most of the team met for lunch and a well deserved massage.
Christi and Dave were my massotherapists, and both of them did a SUPER job relaxing
me! THANKS Christi! THANKS Dave!
3:30 PM - We
boarded a bus and got to our hotel, the Clarion Hotel at the Sandusky Mall. We
checked in, took our showers, then checked into the jacuzzi!! After some lounge
time, John, Mary and I headed back to the High School for dinner and then to Cedar
Point... but not before Anne fixed John's ponytail!
8:00 PM - The 3 of us arrived at Cedar Point, and John and I were determined to
ride The Magnum - the world's biggest, tallest and fastest roller coaster! We
waited about 45 minutes to ride, and it was well worth the wait!! WOW!! What
a rush!! You can see the BIG hill of the Magnum on the horizon of The Sky Ride pic
below... look just above car #17! We took pics of the Magnum... but it was too dark,
and they didn't come out :o(
10:30 PM - We boarded a bus back to the Hotel. I stayed up for a
while, and caught up on some work on my laptop. I went to bed around 12:45 - 1:00
AM.
