You may be asking yourself, "Why do I need someone to do my
résumé? I have a good job..." While you may be happy at your present
position, it is a fact that the average length of employment at a job today is only 4
years. This is why you need to have a current, up to date and professional résumé
ready at all times. To be successful in today's job market, you have to be a few
steps ahead of uncontrollable factors, such as downsizing, relocations, territorial
changes, pay plan changes, buy-outs and closings.
Having a professional résumé is the first step towards landing your next job.
A résumé can be the difference between an employer calling you for an interview, or
moving on to the next applicant. For this reason, you cannot assume that your
résumé is "good enough." You have to ensure that your résumé will
stand out from the rest, make a statement about yourself. Do you know what an
employer looks for in an applicant?
We know what employers look for. We should,
because we've been in managerial positions, and have done the hiring and firing of
employees. We have looked through the piles of applicants. We have been
through the hiring process on both sides, and we know what will set you apart from the
rest. Just to ensure that our résumés are effective, the president of a
multi-million dollar company was asked what he looks for in an applicant. His
response was surprisingly, "No one has ever asked me that question before!"
After some thought, he told us what he looks for in a résumé, and most
importantly, in the applicant him/herself.
In order to know what an employer looks for in an applicant, you also have to know what
an employer doesn't want. To this day, I am still surprised to see people show up
for a job application in shorts, bringing along their kids, or worse yet, a few friends.
The single worst thing that you can do when applying for a job is ask, "Do you
have a pen?" Hey - you know you're going to need one - bring one!
Believe it or not, these factors usually eliminate about half of the applicants in the
pile - and this holds true for just about any type of job position - from a minimum wage
job, all the way to top management jobs! I once asked a guy that was applying for a
job, "Why are you dressed like that?" His response was, "Hey, I'm
only filling out the application, and dropping off my résumé today. What's the
big deal?" Well, the big boss saw him, and never once looked at his
application. Remember, the first impression you make is very important!
